On the contrary, it gained a lot of admiring glances, to say nothing of admiring comments, from people who wanted to know if it was as good as it looked. No, it isn't that good, though it's a pretty fine effort from a company which is still trying to shed its cheap-and-cheerless image in the same way that Seat, for example, was doing ten years ago. In fact there is a lot to commend the Compact (in all but name) with the 1.8-litre engine, the bodykit and the Lotus-tuned suspension. Ha, yes, the Lotus-tuned suspension. This is the most promising marketing concept the car has - to be associated with the internationally renowned former Grand Prix team and chassis miracle worker (what a quaint irony, then, that Lotus and Proton are actually under the same ownership). The phrase "suspension by Lotus" is usually tacked on to a car's name as if followed by the words, "so that's all right, then", though this need not always be the case, as you will know if you have driven a Vauxhall Corsa Sport. The GTi is far better than that, though it's still not the last word in hot hatch handling. In order to keep the ride quality reasonable, the suspension is much softer in the first couple of inches of travel than it becomes subsequently. The principle is fine, but the softness has been overdone, so that on undulating roads the ride manages to be both wallowy and crashy at the same time. The initial uncontrolled body lean also makes the car wander on anything but the smoothest roads, and allows the inside wheel to start spinning on tight corners even on gentle throttle, creating instant and alarming understeer. A Proton salesman with whom I discussed this reckoned that most buyers would not be sufficiently good at driving to notice all this. Personally, I reckon that enthusiastic drivers are exactly the ones the car should be aimed at. If you can persuade yourself not to mind this initial softness, the GTi actually handles not too badly at all. And it certainly goes well, with a rasping 136bhp engine which sounds terrific all the way to the red line (even if it doesn't seem to do a great deal after about 6000rpm). Even at lower speeds the engine sounds purposeful, and in fact that is one thing that is definitely in the Proton's favour compared with its most obvious rival, the Citroen Saxo VTS - it always feels like a hot hatch, even when you're not driving it like one. That doesn't mean it's harsh or unpleasant. It just means that you are always aware of the potential. The other important area in which Proton beats Citroen is interior space. Tall drivers who find the Saxo uncomfortably titchy won't have the same problem aboard a GTi. In most respects the GTi is not a bad car at all. The one issue that needs to be addressed urgently - even before going back to Lotus for another few days' tweaking - is the feeling of solidity. The test car produced quite a variety of rattles and squeaks (a different combination on every trip, it seemed, which I thought was quite a good trick). Most of the switchgear felt as if it was about to fall off. And something about the steering feedback made me suspect that not everything down there had been tightened up by the required amount, though I should add that there was no further evidence of this. Still, the GTi is an impressive first attempt at breaking into the hot hatch market. If the next generation version looks as good, and the various niggles of the current model are sorted out, it could end up being the market leader in a couple of years. Price: £14,499 Capacity: 1834cc Power: 136bhp Maximum speed: 126mph 0-60mph: 7.8 seconds Economy: 41.8mpg extra urban, 32.7mpg combined Insurance: Group 15 Proton figures. Second opinion: The test car was certainly a bit "looser" than the one I drove at the launch. But the GTi still looks terrific. Although it certainly handles better on smooth roads than on bumpy ones, I didn't really mind the suspension trade-off, because I don't want even a GTi - of any make - to ride as if it's cart-sprung. I agree that this Proton is an impressive stage one hot hatch, and I have no difficulty at all in seeing a fully sorted future model as one of the market leaders. Ross Finlay. Mitsubishi Mirage The first generation Satria was a 3-door hatchback based on the 1991 Mitsubishi Mirage (Colt outside the Japanese market). Changes were limited to front-end styling and interior from the bigger Wira. Powerplant options included the 4G13p 1.3-litre 12-valve, 4G15p 1.5-litre 12-valve and 4G92p 1.6-litre 16-valve SOHC engine. The 1.5 and 1.6-litre 16v versions were also available with optional 3-speed and 4-speed automatic transmissions respectively.
Trim levels were LSi, GLi, GLSi and SEi. The base-specification LSi had the 1.3-litre 12-valve engine only: GLi versions got the 1.5-litre 12-valve engine in addition to the 1.3-litre: whilst GLSi and SEi versions got the 1.6 16v engine as well as the 1.5 12v.
A later facelift version featured a different tail-end to the original Mirage. These were launched in 1996 in Malaysia and later in other countries, and new XLi, S XLi and GTi trim levels were available. New 1.3 12v, 1.5 12v and 1.6 16v petrol engines were available.
[edit] Satria GTi Lotus Engineered Proton Satria GTi. The Satria Sports GTi was launched with a 138 bhp (103 kW) 1.8-litre Mitsubishi-sourced 4G93p engine, originally found in the Mitsubishi Lancer GSR but minus the turbo and upped the compression to compensate for the power loss.
This model was later evolved by Lotus Engineering, the Satria GTi's engine and handling was later tuned and revised, delivering 141 brake horsepower (105 kW) at the wheels. It has a top speed of 204 km/h.
During the involvement of Lotus,a new body kit was also adopted for the GTi for better aerodynamics. In the UK this limited edition vehicle wears a Lotus Engineering badge below the Proton Satria GTi badge. Proton claims that the Satria GTi was their fastest car it has ever produced to date.
The MMC (Mitsubishi Motor Company) version was produced from the start of the GTi creation which was 1999 until mid 2002. The VDO(Siemens) version, which has been said to have a little less power and minor problems like cold start issues have been in production from mid 2002 until 2005 when Proton ceased production.

Main article: Proton Satria R3
The Proton Satria R3 is a limited edition Satria sold in Malaysia. The term R3 stands for Race, Rally, Research. R3 is a redefined version of Satria Gti by Proton's Racing development team and also Lotus. It houses the same 1800 cc Mitsubishi 4G93p engine but has undergone some minor adjustments by Lotus handling. Bodyshell has been improved with double stitch welded monocoque chassis with front and rear strut tower brace bars.

Proton Gen-2
Audi A3[citation needed] A 2008 Proton Satria Neo GX in Queensland, Australia. The Satria Neo was introduced in June 2006 as a replacement for the first generation Satria. Based on a new platform developed in-house by Proton (with some parts borrowed from the bigger Gen-2 and Waja), the car is currently only available in a three-door hatchback guise. The car was developed at a cost of RM500 million and four years, and was expected by Proton to generate a monthly sales volume of 2,000 to 2,500 units. The car was also intended to target those who are "youthful and sporty". The Satria Neo was launched by former Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi
The entry-level Satria Neo, the 1.3 L-line, is powered by a 1.3 litre, inline-4 twin-cam Campro engine, producing 94 bhp (70 kW) at 6000 rpm and 120 N m of torque at 4000 rpm. The 1.6 M-line and top-of-the-range H-line models have 1.6 litre versions of the same engine, with an output of 110 hp (82 kW) at 6000 rpm and 148 N m of torque at 4000 rpm. Both the M-line and H-line models have active system antennae which actively search for signals in areas with poor reception. All cars have the option of either 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic gearboxes supplied by Mitsubishi that are carried over from the previous Satria, with the H-line benefitting from safety features such as twin airbags, ABS with EBD and seatbelt pre-tensioners. All versions of the car come with an integrated Blaupunkt CD player.
Criticisms of the car include the lack of headroom and legroom for rear passengers (even compared to the previous generation Satria), and lacklustre performance in comparison with the Satria GTi. The infamous torque dip of Proton's Campro engine is also present.
A Satria Neo is used as the Star in a Bog Standard Car in Top Gear Australia.
[edit] MEM Proton Satria Neo Super 2000 Rally Car Proton Satria Neo Super 2000 Rally Car. MEM has prepared an FIA Super 2000 compliant Proton Satria Neo Evo wanabbe based on the road car's chassis. It is powered by same engine as found in the Proton Waja 1.8. Proton and Norwegian driver Petter Solberg are rumoured to enter the World Rally Championship in 2010 with a Super 2000+ version of the Satria Neo.[1]
[edit] Proton Satria Neo CPS
During February 2009, Proton launched a CPS version of Satria Neo, replacing the top-end H-Line version of the Satria Neo. It comes with an aggressively styled body kit and spoiler that pays homage to the Satria GTi. It is powered by a 1.6 litre CamPro CPS engine with 125 bhp and 150 Nm of torque which reportedly does not suffer from the torque dip of older Campro engines; however, the timing of the cam profile switching mechanism is slightly modified for aggressive driving – the CPS mechanism in the Satria Neo CPS changes from low cam to high cam at 4,400 rpm rather than at 3,800 rpm as in the other CPS-equipped models such as the Proton Waja and Proton Gen-2, as well as the Proton Exora.[2]
[edit] Proton Satria Neo R3 The 2008 model of Proton Satria R3 on display at the 2008 Melbourne Motor Show. As a successor to the original Satria R3, Proton introduced a high performance version of the Satria Neo in 2008.[3] It features a naturally aspired 1.6-liter engine producing 100kW or 135 bhp, which Proton says will deliver a "controlled yet exciting driving experience". Other upgrades include a sportier bodykit, 17-inch wheels, a lowered suspension setup derived from Lotus, an improved braking system, Recaro lightweight seats and a MOMO steering wheel. All of the 50 examples produced come in Incognito Black with a unique "Race, Rally Research" decal on the side.[4]
[edit] Proton Satria Neo R3 Lotus Racing
The 25 unit-only Satria Neo R3 Lotus Racing on 30th March, 2010. Sold at RM115k, this special version of Neo features some improvements over its sibling, Satria Neo CPS. The look similar to that Satria Neo R3, but some equipment is exclusive. The engine is R3-tuned with R3 Engine Management System, R3 Camshafts with adjustable alloy cams and R3 tuned exhaust system. R3 Division also used R3 Carbon Fibre Air Intake with K&N Air Filter System.
The engine now produces 145 bhp, approximately 13.8 percent more power than a normal CamPro CPS. with an improved torque of 168 Nm. Top speed notched reached 205km/h figure and a century run is achieved in 9.2 seconds.
The gear ratios are also revised to match with the engine upgrade.
The chassis and handling are also improved with the use of Ohlins Adjustable coilovers. The wheels are 16-inch Advantis with Bridgestone Adrenalin tyres. The brakes are from AP Racing consisting of AP Racing calipers and pads.
Interior wise—the dash remains the same but it is now painted in greenish accent to match Lotus' green Trademark. Few enhancements are put in place such as the engine start button, dark green nappa leather and an alloy pedal set and gear knob.

(1) Car hypertune | Proton satria GTi | Turbochargers ... Followers Visitor Live Traffic Feedjit Live Blog Stats Wednesday, July 23, 2008 Car hypertune | Proton satria GTi | Turbochargers | Supercharges Turbochargers and supercharges, as you may know, are great for boosting power and torque. But both have their own advantages and disadvantages. Turbochargers are somewhat unpredictable and can prone to boost spikes if not set up properly, suffer from lag and can be difficult to maintain, but are easy to install and offer great power gains.Supercharges on the other hand, can be cumbersome and don’t offer as much power as turbochargers, but they are very linear in their power delivery and less prone to boost spikes.Put the two together and what you could end up with is a lag free, boosted powerhouse of an engine. It has to be said however, idea of a Super-Turbo engine is not new. Nissan fitted a supercharged and turbocharged engine in a Nissan March in 1989 and named it the march SuperTurbo. Lancia Delta S4 used to run supercharged and turbocharged engines as well. These lightweight monsters (most weighed less than 1000kg) were capable of 500-600bhp and driving them took a great amount of skill and testicles the size of basketballs.First the turbocharger and supercharger is a TD05 from an Evo 3 and the supercharger was plucked from a Toyota, presumably from the popular 4A-GZE engine. This GTi also Features not one, but two intercoolers. For the turbocharger, a generic brand Evo sized intercooler sits behind the front bumper and the supercharger’s intake charge is cooled by a top mount intercooler from a Pulsar GTi-R.As the engine runs, so does the supercharger. As the revs climb, so does the boost from the supercharger, then at about 3500-4000rpm, the TD05 begins to come alive and the results is a satisfying and responsive 224bhp at the wheels. Fueling is taken care of by high flow injectors and a Walbro fuel pump. Intake air is filtered by a UR steel mesh air filter and freeing up exhaust gas flow is a custom 3-inch exhaust system. Engine management is taken care of by an OBIT piggyback ECU and an ECU from a lancer EVO II.With 224bhp to handle, the gearbox needs some work to withstand the wrath of all the power and torque. The clutch has been replaced with a beefier item from Exedy and LSD was fitted to help with traction.Suspension is also an area which needs to be looked at with all that extra power. Coming to rescue of this overpowered GTi are WHL shock absorbers, paired with TEIN springs. On the outside, the GTi retains its factory looks, making this car the ultimate sleeper. The only things which would tipd you off that this GTi is like no other, are the bonnet scoop and the intercooler inside the front hood is a carbon fibre item which has been painted to much the rest of the car for the ‘undercover’ style.A great concept this, the Super Turbo Engine. One ‘charger helps the other and together they work to create one beautiful, boosted beast.Suspension is also an area which needs to be looked at with all that extra power.
