6 ISSUES FOR £1 Search Car Reviews: You're in - Car Reviews: First Drives Proton Gen2 GSX Next to well priced, capable rivals, the Proton Gen2 has little to recommend it Auto Express Car Reviews By Chris ThorpJuly 2007 Rating: Buying a new car on a tight budget used to mean shoddy build quality and a woeful driving experience as standard - but not any more. Around town, however, the suspension struggles to cope with potholes, and only at speed is the ride smoothThese days, greater choice and increased competition mean that, for less than £11,000, there's a raft of capable, bargain-priced hatches within reach. Among them is the revamped version of Proton's Gen2, which is launched in the UK this week.The Gen2's biggest attraction is its sleek styling. Despite a look that dates back to 2004, the Malaysian five-door still has sharp lines at the front and neat curves at the rear. To avoid detracting from the shape, the only external change on this most recÂent incarnation is the wheels. New 15-inch alloys are now standard.It's inside where Proton claims to have made the most significant revisions. Despite design input from Lotus, the original Gen2 interior used dreadful plastics - some of which were tinted beige. Thankfully, the old-fashioned colour scheme has now been replaced with darker materials throughout. Black leather upholstery is even fitted as standard.However, we would have prefer-red cheaper cloth trim and an upgrade to the dash quality instead. The plastics used feel brittle and dated, and while some aspects of the design are welcome - such as the neat stack of three climate control dials - the overall ergonomics are a letdown.For instance, even though the driver's seat is height-adjustable, the low steering wheel makes finding the perfect position a challenge. And interior quality isn't exactly enhanced by the optional Bluetooth telephone connection, either. It's a useful feature, but the huge dashboard buttons resemble those on a child's toy!Changes to the way the Gen2 drives are few and far between. Pro-ton is keen to point out that its chassis is developed in conjunction with Lotus, and as a result the hatch is more agile than you might expect. The steering provides little in the way of feedback, although the car does at least offer a decent compromise betÂween ride and handling. Around town, however, the suspension struggles to cope with potholes, and only at speed is the ride smooth. Body roll is limited in corners, yet the Proton handles with the finesse of a car from 1997, not 2007.The Gen2 is available with 1.3 or 1.6-litre petrol engines. With no diesel option, the larger CamPro unit is our pick, but it is coarse at high revs and delivers wheezy performance.Prices start at £8,995, and rise to £11,395 for a top-spec auto. Our five-speed manual 1.6 GSX weighs in at £10,595, pitching it against some ser-iously capable rivals: Ford's cheapest Focus is £11,695, and Kia's Cee'd is available from only £10,995. The Gen2 may have had a subtle makeover, but what it needed was a major overhaul! With Kia's Cee'd showing that cheap motors needn't be shabbily built or offer only average dynamics, the Gen2 is well behind the competition. You should look elsewhere or opt for a nearly new Ford Focus. Next to well priced, capable rivals, the Gen2 has little to recommend it. AT A GLANCE Limited engine choice - with no diesel option - lets the Gen2 down, as do the brittle plastics inside. Styling is enhanced by 15-inch alloys. Expert Rating: If you're thinking of switching from a largish family car into something slightly smaller but just as plush, Proton's GEN-2 GSX is worth considering, thinks Jonathan Crouch`Downsizing' is a current motor industry buzz word. Effectively, it refers to buyers who are choosing to buy a car a size smaller than they normally would in a bid to cut costs. These people however, want to retain all of luxury they were used to.Hence the up-market, up-spec versions of Citycars, Superminis and Family Hatchbacks you can buy. Let's take Family Hatchbacks as a specific example. Though the market leader, Ford's Focus, starts at around £12,500, a surprising number of buyers opt to pay nearly £4,000 more and get what effectively is the same car but with plush Ghia trim. These are people that in the past, would have been buying Mondeos. But what if you could downsize, get all the luxuries you've been used to yet not pay a ridiculous price to do so? That's the thinking behind the car we're looking at here, Proton's GEN-2 1.6 GSX. All right, so you've never heard of it, let alone seen one. So what? All you need to know is that it's affordable and that it's been developed by Lotus. Enough said? Well maybe not. Protons of the past were, to put it politely, less than class-leading. This GEN-2 won't be troubling Ford or Vauxhall sales figures too much but it's a huge amount better than anything the Malaysian marque has produced before. The GSX sits above more basic 1.6 GLS models and comes with a tailgate spoiler and body coloured door mirrors and door handles. The latest versions benefit from a sportier interior with red trim on the seats, doors and steering wheel as well as a re-designed dashboard and handbrake. There's also a redesigned glove box for added comfort and convenience. Other nice touches include leather seats, automatic central locking, a remote-operated boot release and (at last) door-mounted window switches."As a plush Family Hatch without a ridiculous price tag, Proton's Gen-2 GSX makes sense…"Outside, there's a more attractive rear spoiler, plus front and rear skirting, with restyled alloy wheels and race-inspired black-backed headlamps completing the look. There's also a more aggressive bumper and grille. Proton has covered all angles of safety and security with four airbags, and Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) for maximum stability under heavy braking. Choose the automatic version and enjoy cruise control as standard. Climate control with pollen filters and electric rear windows are standard and for the winter, Proton has added electrically adjustable door mirrors with a defogger. Although the GEN-2 will doubtless sell on the basis of its looks and value proposition, a great deal of attention has been paid to how the car drives. Proton own 100 per cent of Lotus and they want a return on that investment. Quick witted steering and an alert feel are Lotus trademarks and the GEN-2 isn't found wanting in this department. Factor in a chassis that corners without a great deal of understeer or body roll and you have a setup which will be more than adequate for most of the target market. The more demanding minority may well find themselves wishing for a little more engine, so good is the ride and handling. The ride is firm without lapsing into harshness and float over longer undulations is well suppressed. Whereas previous Proton models have bought in design and engineering expertise from other companies, the GEN-2 is a proper in-house project that must rely on domestic success. The exterior detailing shows a number of well-judged contemporary features from the sculpted headlamp units to the bold design of the hatch and the coupe-like window line. The 1.6-litre 110bhp CAMPRO engine has been developed in collaboration with Lotus and develops reasonable torque in the mid and upper ranges but you'll need to resort to the gearbox to make progress in the lower gears. Fortunately this isn't too much of a hardship as the standard manual gearbox is a slick system. This GEN-2 will cover the sprint to 60mph from rest in 12.6 seconds and run on to a top speed of 118mph. A combined fuel consumption figure of 39.2mpg and CO2 emissions of just 169g/km are both extremely competitive. There is also a GEN-2 available in ecologic guise which runs on liquefied petroleum gas and offers motorists the opportunity to cut their fuel bills in half. The cabin is a bit of a treat if you're used to acres of dull grey and boring details. It's styled by - you guessed it - the Lotus Design Studio and features a set of vertical air-conditioning knobs on the centre console support and a nice metallic finish that together really are a cut above the class standard in terms of aesthetics. The steering wheel is also massively more sporting looking than the apologetic tillers seen in most cars of the Proton's ilk as is the instrument panel with its twin cowled binnacle and metallic look to the dials themselves. Everywhere you look there are neat design touches, from the unorthodox handbrake grip to the semi-circular door pulls. It's true that this GEN-2 GSX doesn't quite have the polish of a top Ford Focus - but it's not far off and for £4,000 less, you'd be foolish to completely ignore it. In fact, you could end up finding that this Malaysian Family Hatch is one of the industry's best kept secrets…Facts At A Glance CAR: Proton GEN-2 1.6 GSX PRICE: £10,795 - on the road INSURANCE GROUP: 7 CO2 EMISSIONS: 172g/km PERFORMANCE: 0-60mph 12.6s / Max Speed 118mph FUEL CONSUMPTION: (combined) 39.2mpg STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: Twin Airbags / reversing sensors WILL IT FIT IN YOUR GARAGE?: (length/width/height) 4310/1725/1435mm Build Comfort Depreciation Economy Equipment Handling Insurance Performance Styling Value Friday September 12 Send by Messenger Email this article Print ADVERTISEMENT if(window.yzq_d==null)window.yzq_d=new Object();

Member since:04.08.2006 Reviews:8 Members who trust:3 I purchased my Gen 2 GSX in August of last year and boy does it have the "WOW factor", with the stylish exterior running into the fantastic light, airy clean modern design of the interior this car certainly does turn heads. This car has impressed not just the younger generation with it style and pazzaz but also because of its smooth lines and sexy curb appeal. When I first rolled up in this vehicle at my local filling station which was also the drop in centre for the local boy racers, I was stranded for almost two hours with the car getting a once over and lots of questions being asked off with regards the car. When I use to pull into the local supermarket carparks I would get elderly and parents coming over to look at the space that was inside this remarkable car.The Exterior of the car is clean lined and because it was the GSX had all the colour coding that you needed across the exterior of the car, right down to the electric mirrors. The spoiler looked extremely smart along with the very impressive alloy wheels. The interior of the car was exceptionaly spacious, clean lined and light and airy, with the 10 change CD player placed in the rather spacious boot, the Main CD/Radio Player was built into the dashboard and looked extremely smart and clean lined, along with the effective use of the climate controlled interior this car was extremely comfortable to drive in hot or cold weather without feeling uncomfrtable.The useful use of space and features within the car make this an extremely practical all rounder, for the average person with an average pocket not wanting to spend large amounts of money on a car like all cars that depreciate very quickly in this day and age. The all round on road performance of this car is excellent, it glides round the toughest of bends with ease and makes any passenger feel at home with the quiet, laid back reliability of the mechanics of the car.All in all I am a big believer in the Proton Gen 2 GSX they have excellent customer service and after sales advice and long term warrantees on all their cars and will bend over backward to support you in any way. I will defiantely give this the thumbs up for both value for money, style, performance for this excellent value for money all rounder car which is safe reliable and indeed has got the "X Factor"XTRA INFO: Hi there thanx for all your remarks. I find it quite helpful, this is the first time I have done anything like this before and I am enjoying it so far . I need it noted to you all that I no longer have the Gen 2 which I dearly miss, due to my divorce but at the time It has made me an avid fan of them, I also had up until the divorce and Proton Jumbuck. But thats another story. Right Boot size, and interior space, boot size is fairly good you can put two suitcases and an large overnight bag in there comfortably, with the parcel shelf on., although normally I had two golden retrievers in there, the only downfall I would say is where the CD changer is placed on the left side next to the wheel arch which can prove to be awkward at times. Another thing I find quite usefull some may not but was the netting attached to the boot floor to stop your shopping rolling around in the boot, this just lifted and stretched as it was made of elastic and then re-attatched to hold your shopping in place. As for seating space, plenty I have a 17 & 18 year old and they could fit in comfortably in the back and still have plenty of leg room, my son is especially tall with big feet.. He himself had become a lover of the New Lotus handled modern Proton. Proton have come on a lot in the past few years thanks to Lotus now being on board. There style although may be cheaply made is certainly a winner and very stylish, I wouldn't go for any other car if I had that sort of money to burn, its got everything you could want in a car and more.
